What is Greatness?
Henry was only six years old and loved to tend the garden with his mother. He worked hard and as he became a teenager was tending a garden of almost four acres. Henry used the family horse to work his growing garden and made deliveries with the horse and a small wagon. He had many customers and stores all over town.
Henry’s business grew, and as he became an adult he would help promote the church and its work, especially the work of the Sunday school. Now running a thriving business, Henry took great care of his helpers and pioneered safe food preparation.
Henry provided for his workers, treated people equally and enhanced their living conditions. When Henry died and his will was read, the first words he had written were his confession of faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior. He gave credit to God for sustaining him all through his life and for granting him such great success.
Henry also credited his mother’s faith in Jesus and teaching him what is truly important. Henry’s company was named for his 57 varieties of his garden vegetables and today sells over 1,300 products under the H.J. Heinz name.
Most people would say the invention of Heinz Ketchup is what made Henry Heinz a success, but Henry would say it was God. Henry knew the real source of his success and where it came from.
